WHEREAS, on April 19, 1985, Tohono Chul was officially dedicated by Richard and Jean Wilson, who imagined a place where visitors could find solace in the area’s natural beauty, appreciate the significance of conserving the desert landscape, and gain a deeper insight into its indigenous cultures; and
WHEREAS, for 40 years, Tohono Chul has become a beloved community sanctuary where nature, art, and culture beautifully intertwine, serving as an oasis of inspiration, beauty, and learning in the heart of Oro Valley and Northwest Tucson; and
WHEREAS, established to safeguard the natural heritage of the region, Tohono Chul has enriched the lives of countless visitors with its stunning gardens, art exhibits, engaging educational programs, and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship; and
WHEREAS, over the past four decades, Tohono Chul has solidified its status as a cornerstone of the Tucson community, bringing together individuals of all ages to celebrate the land, its history, and its future; and
WHEREAS, Tohono Chul continues to shine as a beacon of conservation and sustainability, preserving the region’s unique biodiversity while inspiring future generations to protect and cherish the natural world.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Joseph C. Winfield, Mayor of the Town of Oro Valley, in acknowledgment of its remarkable contributions and lasting impact, do hereby proclaim April 19, 2025 as
TOHONO CHUL DAY
and invite all citizens to celebrate and support this esteemed institution as it moves into its next chapter of growth and inspiration.
