Oro Valley Starts Enforcing Short-Term Rental Rules

Oro Valley Reminds Residents About New Short-Term Rental Rules

Hey Oro Valley! Just a quick reminder that as of Friday, May 5, 2023, our town is now enforcing the new rules for short-term and vacation rentals. These rules, covering popular platforms like Airbnb and VRBO, were introduced back on February 3. The Town Council gave everyone a 90-day grace period to get used to the new system. Now, it’s time to make sure you’re all set.

If you own a short-term rental and haven’t registered yet, expect a letter from the town soon. You’ll need to pay a $100 civil sanction along with the $80 licensing fee. Make sure you complete your registration by June 6. Missing this deadline will lead to a Notice of Violation and a date with the Oro Valley Municipal Court.

How to Register Your Rental

To get your rental property registered, get ready with some paperwork. You’ll need proof of insurance, a notification for your neighbors about your rental, and evidence that your property is listed with the Pima County Assessor as a short-term rental. Also, bring a form of personal ID. The annual license is $80, just like a regular business license. For full details and to register online, click here. If you need assistance, reach out to the Community and Economic Development Department at 520-229-4800.

Reporting a Violation

Think there’s a violation happening around you? The town encourages you to report it. Look out for rentals without proper licensing, missing neighborhood notification forms, or those not showing a town license number on promotions. Before reporting, check the short-term rental property map to see if the property is already licensed. For rental or zoning issues, call the Community and Economic Development Department at 520-229-4800. For noise or criminal complaints, contact the Oro Valley Police at 520-229-4900 or dial 911 in an emergency.

About Our Short-Term Rental Ordinance

Short-term rentals have been a part of Oro Valley life and contribute positively to our local economy. To keep things running smoothly and maintain our community’s quality of life, the town introduced this licensing system. Rentals are allowed in all residential areas unless restricted by a Homeowner Association. Some neighborhoods might have private agreements regarding rentals; these are outside the town’s control.
