Celebrate Parks & Recreation Month in Oro Valley – July 2024

July is Parks and Recreation Month in Oro Valley—a time to celebrate the green spaces, trails and facilities that enrich our community. Designated by Mayor Joe Winfield, this month highlights how our parks promote health, foster social connections and support economic vitality. Whether you’re hiking desert trails, playing sports or simply enjoying a picnic, there is something for everyone to discover.

Health and Wellness Benefits

Spending time outdoors in Oro Valley’s parks can boost both physical and mental health. Regular exercise—walking, jogging, swimming or playing team sports—improves cardiovascular fitness, builds strength and increases flexibility. Exposure to natural light and green spaces also reduces stress, eases symptoms of depression and enhances attention span. Families can turn a simple stroll at Naranja Park into quality time that strengthens bonds and encourages healthy habits for all ages.

Economic and Community Impact

Well-maintained parks and recreation facilities contribute to neighborhood livability and property values. By attracting visitors and events, they expand the local tax base and support small businesses—from equipment rental shops to food trucks. Studies show that accessible green spaces can lower crime rates by offering safe, supervised areas for youth and encouraging positive community interactions.

July Events and Activities

  • Outdoor Movie Night: Family-friendly films under the stars at Naranja Park every Friday in July.
  • Community Yoga: Free sunrise and sunset classes on the lawn at the Oro Valley Community & Recreation Center.
  • Trail Cleanup Day: Join volunteers for a morning of litter removal and habitat restoration at Honey Bee Canyon.
  • Pickleball Tournament: Tournament play and workshops at Steam Pump Ranch pickleball courts.
  • Family Nature Scavenger Hunt: Guided activity at Catalina State Park with prizes for all participants.

Volunteer and Participation Opportunities

Residents can give back by volunteering with the Parks & Recreation Department. Opportunities include trail maintenance, event support and planting native species. Volunteer hours count toward community service requirements and provide a chance to meet neighbors who share your love of the outdoors. Sign up online or contact the department for details.
