OV’s Future: Youth Lead the Way in Oro Valley

Did you know that the name of Oro Valley’s current General Plan, “Your Voice, Our Future,” was inspired by a high school student? This idea reflects the voices of our community and was approved by over 70% of voters in 2016. As we begin planning for the next General Plan, our youth are more involved than ever, thanks to the efforts of the Youth Advisory Council.

For those unfamiliar, the Oro Valley Youth Advisory Council was formed in 2012 to give young people a voice in local government. Guided by Jessica Hynd, the council consists of around 25 students from local high schools like Ironwood Ridge and Canyon Del Oro. They join through an application process, aiming to bridge the gap between the younger and older generations in our community.

The Youth Advisory Council has been busy over the years. They’ve visited senior living centers for the Music & Memory Project, hosted “dive-in” movie nights at the Aquatic Center, and even learned pickleball with the Sun City Pickleball Club. Their latest project? A series of financial literacy workshops for young folks this spring. Through these activities, they gain insight into local government and attend Town Council meetings to see how everything works.

This year, the Youth Advisory Council is also part of creating the Community Engagement Plan for the 2026 General Plan. This important document sets the vision and goals for Oro Valley’s quality of life. The planning kicked off in January with meetings involving Town Council members, various Boards, and, of course, the Youth Advisory Council.

With a front-row seat to these discussions, I’ve seen the enthusiasm and insight these students bring. They engage meaningfully with people of all ages, offering fresh perspectives on community issues. Their articulate and respectful contributions are truly impressive.

These young leaders are bringing new energy to our town, and it’s important to highlight their contributions, especially as we look towards the future. If you know a high school student in Oro Valley who wants to get involved, encourage them to apply for the Youth Advisory Council. Applications for the 2023/24 term are open until March 31, and details are available at www.orovalleyyouth.com.

As we gear up for the Community Engagement phase of the General Plan this fall, I invite everyone to get involved. Whether online or in person, we want your input on the future of Oro Valley. The Youth Advisory Council has started the conversation, and with your help, we can keep it going. I’ll be there, and I hope to see you too.
