Is Oro Valley Ready for Monsoon Season?

Get Ready for Monsoon Season, Oro Valley!

With summer just around the corner, the Town of Oro Valley Stormwater Utility wants to remind everyone to be monsoon aware and safe. These summer storms not only provide relief from the heat but also bring heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. This can lead to dangerous flash floods.

Flash floods are the top weather-related cause of death in the U.S., and nearly half of these incidents involve vehicles. Remember the motto: “turn around, don’t drown.” If you’re unsure, it’s best to change your route or wait it out.

Here are some important safety tips:

– Never drive around road closure barricades. It’s illegal and risky. Just 10 inches of water can sweep away vehicles like cars and SUVs.
– Keep children away from storm drains and washes.
– Shelter your pets indoors during storms.
– Be extra cautious at night since flood dangers are harder to spot.
– If flooding occurs, head to higher ground immediately. Avoid dips, low spots, canyons, and washes.
– Never drive through flooded roads. If your car gets caught in rising water, abandon it and move to higher ground.

Homeowners should also protect their properties during the rainy season. Check if your property is in a floodplain and have an evacuation plan ready. Stock up on sandbags, plywood, and other materials for quick repairs. Secure belongings to prevent them from floating away. Know safe high ground locations and speak with your insurance agent about flood insurance. It’s important to note that typical homeowners’ insurance doesn’t cover flood losses. You can get coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program, but remember there’s a waiting period.

Keeping our environment clean during the monsoon is crucial too. The Town of Oro Valley, along with the EPA and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, works to prevent pollutants from entering stormwater runoff. When it rains, watch how water flows off your property. If it carries pollutants, they can enter our stormwater system and harm the environment. Here are some tips to prevent pollution:

– Ensure pool or spa water drained to the street is clear, pH neutral, and low in chlorine. Alternatively, drain it to the sanitary sewer or your property.
– Dispose of pet waste in the trash.
– Keep trash container lids closed to keep rainwater out.
– Use pesticides and herbicides sparingly and follow instructions.
– Regularly check your vehicle for leaks and fix them promptly.
