Oro Valley’s K9 Risu Receives Protective Body Armor Donation

Oro Valley K9 Officer to Receive Protective Vest

The Oro Valley Police Department’s K9 Risu is getting some new gear, thanks to the generosity of a local supporter. Terri Hendricks from Tucson has sponsored a bullet and stab protective vest for Risu, a valued member of the police force. The vest will be embroidered with a special tribute: “In honor of Gene and Marvin Evans.” It’s expected to arrive in about eight to ten weeks.

This generous donation comes from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 2009. Their mission is to equip law enforcement dogs with protective vests, helping to keep our four-legged officers safe. The vests are American-made, custom-fitted, and meet national safety standards. Since they started, Vested Interest in K9s has provided over 4,275 vests across all 50 states, a total value of $6.9 million, funded by donations from individuals and companies.

The program is open to K9s that are at least 20 months old, currently working, and certified with law enforcement agencies. Dogs with vests that are no longer effective can also get replacements. It’s estimated that around 30,000 law enforcement K9s serve across the United States.

If you’re interested in supporting this cause, Vested Interest in K9s accepts tax-deductible donations of any size, with $960 covering the cost of one vest. Each vest is worth between $1,744 and $2,283, weighs around 4 to 5 pounds, and includes a five-year warranty.
