August Marks Drowning Impact Awareness Month in Oro Valley
Mayor Joseph C. Winfield has officially declared August 2022 as Drowning Impact Awareness Month in Oro Valley. This initiative emphasizes the importance of keeping our children and teens safe around water. With nearly two million young lives to look after in Arizona, their well-being is crucial for our state’s future.
Drowning is a leading cause of injury and death for kids and teenagers in Arizona. It impacts not just the victims and their families, but also our emergency workers and the wider community. The good news is, almost all child drownings can be prevented.
Effective strategies are out there. They include diligent supervision, ensuring restricted access to water, using life jackets, taking swimming lessons suitable for both children and adults, and knowing how to respond quickly in emergencies with skills like CPR.
Throughout August, the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona will team up with local governments, community groups, and citizens to engage and educate communities statewide. Their coordinated efforts aim to reduce drowning risks, help families stay strong, and protect our young ones.
Mayor Winfield encourages everyone in Arizona to get involved in these life-saving efforts. Let’s all play a part in making our community safer for our children and teens.
