Understanding Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive movement disorder that affects the central nervous system. It impacts a person’s ability to control movement, often starting with tremors or stiffness. Although it primarily affects older adults, Parkinson’s can strike individuals under the age of 50 as well.
- Nearly one million Americans are currently living with Parkinson’s disease.
- Each year, approximately 60,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States.
- Seven to ten million people are estimated to be living with Parkinson’s worldwide.
- While Parkinson’s is more common among older adults, about 4% of cases are diagnosed in people under 50.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of Parkinson’s remains unknown, and currently, there is no cure. However, access to education, exercise, and support services can significantly improve quality of life for those living with the disease.
Why Community Events Like This Matter
Oro Valley is home to many residents living with Parkinson’s and related conditions. Local health initiatives, such as Liberty Science’s free April wellness classes, offer a critical opportunity for connection, movement, and support. These classes can help with balance, coordination, and mood—all essential components of Parkinson’s care.
As our population continues to age, raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease in Southern Arizona becomes even more important. By participating in local programs and spreading the word during Parkinson’s Awareness Month 2025, community members can take a proactive step toward making a difference.
