The Children’s Museum Tucson has come a long way since it first opened 30 years ago! Known as the oldest museum in Arizona, it’s a lively place full of fun and learning for everyone. With its beautiful green courtyard, educational exhibits, and the creative Imaginarium Art Studio, this museum is truly a community treasure. They’re celebrating their 30th anniversary with some exciting events, so it’s a great time to check it out.
A Growing Legacy
Starting from a single room at Fort Lowell Park, the museum has transformed over the years. It now sits in a historic building, offering lots of activities for families looking for an educational day out. The welcoming courtyard and diverse events create a delightful atmosphere for visitors of all ages.
STEM Education Takes Center Stage
Michael Luria, the museum’s executive director, is proud of what they’ve accomplished. The “Techtopia” room is gearing up for an exciting exhibit where kids can record and compare their movements with friends. Plus, the “Investigation Station” has two new hands-on STEM installations. Visitors like Chloe Atkins have been spotted diving into these interactive displays, showcasing the museum’s educational impact.
A Look Back at the Carnegie Free Library
The museum’s home, the historic Carnegie Free Library, was built in 1901 with funds from Andrew Carnegie. Learn more about Andrew Carnegie’s story here. Designed by architect Henry Trost, you can find more about his work here. Over the years, it has grown and changed, adding beautiful features like the Bufano Bench in 1920. Despite a fire in 1941, the building was restored and expanded, eventually making its way onto the National Historic Register in 1976. The Children’s Museum Tucson took over in 1991, preserving this iconic building.
Magic of the Kaleidoscope
Visitors are often enchanted by the kaleidoscope in the Electri-City exhibit. Carmela Brienzas found herself lost in the colorful and mesmerizing patterns it creates—a truly unforgettable part of her visit.

The museum offers an exciting birthday party option for kids. Starting at $225, you can enjoy two hours in a special birthday room for 20 guests. The package includes an activity led by a discovery guide, balloons, and table covers. Explore birthday packages here.
