Cañada del Oro Wash Project Kicks Off in Oro Valley
This week, construction is starting on the Cañada del Oro (CDO) Wash Levee Augmentation Project. If you frequent The Loop trail, heads up—there will be some intermittent closures from N. La Cañada Drive to N. Oracle Road. The work, led by the Pima County Regional Flood Control District, is set to wrap up by the end of November 2024, as long as the weather cooperates.
The Bighorn Fire back in 2020 left behind quite a bit of sediment in the CDO Wash. This build-up has made it tough for the wash to handle its usual flow, so this project is going to clear things up and boost flood protection for nearby homes and businesses. KE&G Construction is on board to carry out the project.
A study after the fire pinpointed seven key areas in need of sediment removal and new flood walls. These updates will help manage the wash’s flow. The work will progress from west to east, so keep an eye on the map to see where crews are working next.
Funding for this undertaking comes from the Pima County Regional Flood Control District Tax Levy and a generous $2.5 million grant from FEMA. Fortunately, the Town of Oro Valley doesn’t have to pick up any of the tab.
