Explore the Wonders of Biosphere 2
Biosphere 2 is an incredible gem right in our backyard that has caught the attention of folks across the country. Now open to the public, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring ecology, climate change, and the University of Arizona’s efforts to protect our planet.
This unique spot has been described in many ways. Some see it as a community resource, others as a learning hub, and for some, it’s a demonstration of science’s limits. There’s a lot to know about this enclosure, its current use, and the rich history it holds.
Originally, Biosphere 2 was a vivarium—an enclosed space designed to explore various climates through “biomes.” The main goal was to see if we could create artificial habitats that might one day support human life in space. Scientists lived in these environments for long periods, depending only on the plants and animals they grew. They carried out two missions, each with challenges, but managed to thrive for nearly four years without outside help. Far from failures, these missions taught us valuable lessons that could be applied elsewhere.
Today, Biosphere 2 is a hub for environmental research, and visitors can see scientists at work in each biome. Wander through the savannah, rainforest, mangroves, coral reefs, and fog desert, each carefully crafted to mimic its real-world counterpart. Your visit includes a self-guided tour with insights into the history and features of each biome.
