Oro Valley Residents Urged to Stay Informed as Bighorn Fire Spreads
The Town of Oro Valley and the Oro Valley Police Department are keeping a close eye on the Bighorn Fire burning in the Catalina Mountains. The fire has now spread to 1,000 acres. The Oro Valley Police Department is in constant communication with Golder Ranch Fire District personnel to stay updated on the situation.
Police Chief Kara Riley encourages residents to stay informed by signing up for the Town’s Code RED notification system. “Social media is great, but not everyone uses it. Signing up for Code RED ensures we can reach as many people as possible with important updates,” she said. “Also, please remember there’s a flight restriction in the area. Drones can be very dangerous for the aircraft tackling the fires.”
To sign up for Code RED, visit orovalleyaz.gov. Make sure your browser is up to date for the best experience.
Golder Ranch Fire District Chief Randy Karrer mentioned that the fire is currently being battled mostly from the air, as it is in difficult-to-access canyons. Golder Ranch crews are in the La Reserve area, closely monitoring the situation and assisting Forest Service firefighters.
Important Reminders for the Community:
1. Catalina State Park Closure: The park is closed until further notice for public safety.
2. Fireworks Test Launch Cancelled: The test launch planned for tonight at Naranja Park has been cancelled. We’ll announce a new date soon.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation unfolds.
