Celebrating 10 Years of Service at Oro Valley Library

The Oro Valley Library has blossomed into a cornerstone of our community, offering something special for everyone, from toddlers to seniors. Spanning an impressive 25,000 square feet, the library is not just a place for books but a hub of modern facilities and programs. With a dedicated technical librarian and a computer classroom open to the public, the library is committed to staying at the forefront of technology.

Since opening in 2002, the library has become a cherished spot in Oro Valley. Mayor Satish Hiremath played a key role in creating the popular children’s room, highlighting the library’s importance to the community.

Technology at the Library

Though Oro Valley lacks a dedicated community center, the library has filled that gap by expanding from 15,000 to 25,000 square feet. Since its inception in 2002, the library has continually updated its facilities with smart boards and surround sound systems. Catherine Strong, the Technology Librarian, offers staff two computer classes each month, ensuring they’re savvy with the latest tech.

Public Use Computers

The library boasts an array of public-use computers, including desktops with Internet access and catalog-only options. Thanks to a generous donation, the refurbished computer classroom now features 10 computers, wireless keyboards, and unique artwork. This space is dedicated to offering computer classes, inviting everyone to participate in both lectures and hands-on tech training.

Mary Kim Dodson: A Community Gem

Mary Kim Dodson, the Adult Services Librarian, is a true community asset. She organizes art rotations every six weeks, providing local artists a chance to showcase and sell their work.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

The library is thrilled to have a Teen Zone, designed with input from the Teen Advisory Board. This fun area includes flat-screen TVs, beanbags, a snack machine, and gaming systems. Funded by the Friends of Oro Valley, the room, established in 2005, benefits from TAB members who meet monthly to plan activities and engage with the community.

Volunteer Opportunities

The library is a treasure trove of cozy reading nooks, historical exhibits, and art displays, thanks to its friendly staff and countless volunteers. These volunteers help with everything from shelving books to running the Friends of the Oro Valley Public Library Book Shoppe.

Founded in 2001, the Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for library operations. Their two bookstores generate $3,500 to $4,000 monthly, and their efforts have raised over $100,000 annually. Now, they aim to expand collections to include classic Western literature and collectible books.

Joanna Dumis, the manager of the Book Shoppe, highlights the essential role of volunteers in sorting books, creating displays, and training. Their dedication brings a sense of accomplishment and community service.

Great Literature of All Times Club

The library hosts numerous popular programs every month. Dr. Bill Fry leads the Great Literature of All Times Club on the third Thursday, sparking discussions about influential works. On Fridays, former exec Beth Cole offers job and career guidance sessions, and retired teachers Bev and Dan Dutz provide student tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Don’t miss Storytime, a favorite among kids, held four times a week. For more event details, visit orovalleyaz.gov.

The Oro Valley Library enhances our community’s quality of life with educational opportunities and amenities. Since 2002, it has grown into a welcoming hub of education and culture, offering 41 public computers and a newly updated computer classroom for hands-on learning.
