Oro Valley Declares Local Emergency: What You Need to Know

Today, Mayor Joe Winfield officially announced a local emergency in Oro Valley. While this isn’t a mandate, it’s a strong recommendation for restaurants and similar businesses to promote social distancing. The Mayor suggests they focus on delivery and take-out services.

Mayor Winfield expressed his gratitude to the businesses already taking steps to adjust. “I appreciate the restaurants and businesses that have already taken the initiative to put social distancing into practice by adjusting their services and encouraging more take-out and delivery orders,” he said. He acknowledged the pandemic’s significant impact on families, schools, and businesses, highlighting how this move aims to keep our community aligned for public health.

The proclamation also ensures that our Mayor and Council will keep governing, though there might be some changes to Town Meetings or even cancellations to prioritize everyone’s safety.

Oro Valley’s actions align with other areas in Pima County, all aiming to tackle the pandemic together. You can read the signed emergency proclamation here.

Inside the Proclamation

The proclamation emphasizes the seriousness of COVID-19, echoing the State of Emergency declared by both Arizona’s Governor Doug Ducey on March 11, 2020, and then-President Donald Trump on March 13, 2020.

Health authorities, including the CDC, recommend avoiding gatherings of more than 10 people over the next eight weeks. Oro Valley is committed to protecting its citizens by planning for potential closures and enhancing communication.

Mayor Winfield urges everyone in Oro Valley to follow CDC guidelines and those from national and local leaders. By doing so, we can help reduce the spread of the virus.

The official proclamation declares a local emergency, aiming to “flatten the curve” and ensure hospitals can treat all patients. It also seeks to maximize funds for the town and affected businesses.
