Local Artist Finds Joy in Nature-Inspired Creations
Growing up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, I always had a deep love for nature’s beauty. But after the Blizzard of ’78, I decided it was time for a change and moved to Tucson, seeking a warmer, snow-free climate. Though I miss the ocean, I’ve fallen head over heels for the Sonoran Desert. The blue skies, stunning sunsets, and vibrant plant and animal life have captured my heart. After retiring, my husband and I became docents at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, where my passion for nature and natural history has only grown stronger.
Throughout my life, I’ve enjoyed capturing the beauty around me with photos, often turning them into photo cards for friends. About ten years ago, a friend’s invitation to try some art in her community’s arts and crafts room opened new doors for me. Although I was a novice, I started with ceramics and found great joy in it. My friend encouraged me to explore further, leading me to experiment with collage, acrylics, watercolors, and even batik with watercolor. I took a class on painting silk scarves with acrylic ink, which was a delightful experience. Inspired by this, we began painting silk material, which we then mounted on canvas, creating vibrant pieces. More recently, I’ve been working with copper and trying my hand at acrylic pouring.
Thanks to my friend’s invitation and guidance, I’ve discovered a love for creating art using various multimedia techniques. My artwork is a reflection of my love for nature and vibrant colors. I’ve had the pleasure of showcasing my work at numerous Arts and Crafts Fairs, including those at The Highlands, St. Philips Plaza, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Omni Tucson National, and the Tucson Mall Art Marketplace.
