Oro Valley SRO Program: A Pillar of Community Support
For over three decades, the Oro Valley Police Department (OVPD) has proudly placed school resource officers (SROs) in our schools, nurturing a tradition of care and commitment to our children. The curriculum might have evolved over the years, but our dedication to young people remains unwavering. Today, I want to shine a light on our vibrant SRO program and the remarkable law enforcement professionals who support our schools, students, teachers, and administrators.
At OVPD, our SRO program employs a triad approach: our officers act as teachers, mentors, and law enforcement officers. In the classroom, they address current and challenging topics for young people. They also cover subjects suggested by teachers, like the impact of drugs, distracted driving, and cyberbullying.
Our SROs also serve as mentors, stepping in to guide children through tough times, whether it’s dealing with family changes, the loss of a loved one, or navigating peer pressure to make wise choices.
The final component of this triad is law enforcement. OVPD is steadfast in its mission to protect our youth from potential threats, teaching them how to respond in dangerous situations.
We encourage all our officers to be innovative in serving the community, and our SRO program is no exception. Here are some fantastic initiatives our SROs have undertaken:
Our officers dedicate considerable time and resources to ensure school campuses remain safe. They’re highly visible and actively engaged with students and faculty, maintaining community safety during school hours. With school back in session, we remind everyone to be extra cautious on the roads, as traffic tends to increase in the morning and afternoon. Keep an eye out for school buses stopping to pick up and drop off students.
To our students: As you return to school, know that these officers are eagerly waiting to reconnect with “their kids.” It’s been tough not seeing your familiar faces over the past year, and we’ve missed you all greatly. Remember, OVPD SROs are part of your school family, and we are thrilled to welcome you back!
